Did you know that breast reconstruction surgery with implants can be a two-step process? It can be done immediately after a mastectomy or as a delayed procedure.
In the first step, a tissue expander is placed by the surgeon to increase the size of the breast pocket, so there is enough space to place an implant. The tissue expander is gradually filled over two to six months until it reaches the desired size. In the second step, the tissue expander is replaced with a breast implant.
However, in some cases, it's possible to have direct-to-implant breast reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy, meaning tissue expanders are not used.
